Flagship-innovation
The European Flagship project carries out research into on-board systems, procedures and management systems, new technologies‟ influence on existing vessels and more effective communication. The common goal is to achieve a safer and more ecologically friendly shipping industry in Europe, with increased competitive potential. All this is in total accordance with the European Commission‟s strategic vision „Transport Policy to 2010: time to decide‟. The subsidy project is part of the European Commission‟s 6th Framework Programme, in which several European parties –like maritime research institutes, shipowners and trade organisations– work together.
The integral approach allows results derived from the various studies to be transcribed into
new and innovative systems, processes and procedures. These may be applied to day-to-day management of many types of ships, but equally to emergency situations. At the same time new standards are being developed, ensuring that the various innovations will meet the requirements of (inter)national legislation as and when they are implemented.
The KVNR is actively involved in the „human element‟ aspect. Any potential changes to the way ships are manned must be in accordance with the currently applicable Maritime Crews Act. In the KVNR‟s opinion it is essential to preserve the act‟s current system.
